Waking Up

If you are beyond high school age, you have probably realized that life is strange. I don't know about you, but I seem to be an especially late bloomer. We go to school, have a family, all the while wondering what our life will be about. And there it is. Going to school, having a family. But then, the family goes on to repeat that same process, and once again, you stumble around with the issues of what you will do with yourself, now that THEY are doing the same for THEMSELVES. It's a process that may repeat itself several times.

My blog, "Music Afterlife" may take several forms before I'm done, but basically, I'm interested in the fact that numerous others I have come to know are either starting or continuing their musical lives well past when most of us have completed at least one prior life. I'm not talking about reincarnation, although it does take on that quality from time to time.

Despite writing furiously for years, most of my work sat in the dark, untouched. Recently, however (within the last 2 years), I joined a group called SUSWA (Southern Utah Songwriters Association) where I finally had the opportunity to ask some pertinent questions, and discover what most others knew for most of their lives: what do you do once you have written the music? Where do you do from here?

The beauty of this group is that there are people even older than myself who are just getting into writing, who are performing, and yes, recording. The recording is the scariest part of this journey to me, but also the one that brings your music to life. So, it's the life AFTER my life. Or, at least after SOME of my lives. Like I said. Late bloomers. It is never too late to try something new. It is never too late to pursue a goal or a dream, and above all, it is never too late to make a fool of yourself. In fact, the later it is, the more you are apt to enjoy it!
